eggs, tomato sauce, parmesan cheese and toasted bread

Eggs in Purgatory is a Neapolitan dish, similar to the Middle Eastern shakshuka. It consists of eggs cooked in a tomato sauce, often enriched with chili pepper, garlic and basil. The name comes from the idea of eggs (representing souls) immersed in the fiery sauce, evoking the purifying flames of Purgatory.
If we want to connect the dish to the Divine Comedy, we can think of the representation of Dante’s Purgatory, where the souls atone for their sins through trials often characterized by fire and suffering, but with the hope of salvation.
